High Tea is often used as a misnomer.
Most people refer to Afternoon Tea as High Tea, when in fact, High Tea was a hearty supper and tea after a day at work.
High Tea would be served at the main table or "high table" rather than in the parlour.
Afternoon Tea is also called Low Tea because it was usually taken in the sitting room where low tables (like a coffee table) were placed near armchairs.
Lately, High Tea is finding itself back in fashion, with more and more hotels and restaurants in Auckland offering an Afternoon Tea service. But we believe that Prohibition Restaurant, with its premises built in 1912 and replicated historic interior decor, has the most appropriate nostalgic setting for a High Tea in Auckland.
Not many restaurants in Auckland have a dedicated Pastry Chef in their kitchen, let alone one as talented as our Richard Arboleda, who has won the title of NZ Pastry Chef of the Year 3 times!
TVNZ made a short film about Richard which appeared on channel ONE in the Asia Downunder program in August 2011. Click here to watch the film or to view photographs of Richard`s desserts and cakes.

Every pastry item is made in-house.
All guests are served 2 courses of different style tea to match savoury and sweet food sections. You can view our tea selection here.
